The present invention relates to an antibacterial peptide isolated and purified from a cocoon extract of tilapia (Nile tilapia). The peptides can be produced by chemical synthesis or expression in heterologous systems such as bacteria and yeast by conventional molecular biology techniques. The peptides exhibit antibacterial activity against various organisms including gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria, fungi and viruses. The present invention also includes a composition for controlling a pathogen comprising the antibacterial peptide.
