The mosquito-borne diseases are on rise in many developing countries globally. The commercial mosquito repellent coils and vaporizers use toxic chemical agents such as dimethyl phthalate and N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET), which have been found to be associated with rashes, skin irritation, numb or burning lips, nausea, headaches, dizziness and difficulty concentrating and, further worse, behavioral changes and even diffuse brain cell death - on frequent and prolonged exposure. A process was developed to prepare a low-cost mosquito repellent coil, using indigenously available herbal products, which are not only non-toxic, but also beneficial for human, being ingredients of several medical formulations (especially, in indigenous systems of medicines, namely, Siddha, Ayurveda, etc.). The specific combinations of these ingredients were selected for best workability (for coil-moulding), combustion-continuity as well as effectiveness against common mosquitos. The present invention relates to specific mosquito repellent compositions comprising of selection from a range of active agents (nochi or Vitex nigundo, lemongrass oil, marigold powder and neem leaf powder/oil), base-materials (cow-dung, wood powder & coconut shell powder) and binder (maida & sambrani) in optimized proportions.
