The invention relates to a multi-chamber system (1) for generating biogas from a fermentable substrate. By virtue of the special design of the multi-chamber system, which comprises at least two chambers, preferably three chambers (2, 3, 4), a method for generating biogas is provided, said method ensuring a continuous generation of gas in the event of a discontinuous supply of putrescible biomass. In the method for generating biogas in the multi-chamber system (1), a fermentation container (3) is provided in particular which takes multiple aspects into consideration while efficiently generating biogas, in particular the aspect of buffering the putrescible substrate in the event of an irregular supply of the required biomass. Additionally, the structure of the entire multi-chamber system (1) is designed such that the system can be erected compactly in a modular manner.
