The present invention relates to an orthodontic bracket for coupling an archwire with a tooth, comprising a bracket body and a rotatable member. The rotatable member is rotatable between an opened position and a closed position. A retention member provides a body, the rotatable member, and at least one positive stop when rotating the rotatable member and is fixed in a locking mechanism which produces a discernible indication when the rotatable member is in at least the closed position. In one closed position, the rotatable member actively ligates the archwire and in the other closed position, the rotatable member passively ligates the archwire. The locking mechanism is separated from the retention member and includes at least one pin which slidably contacts the rotatable member. The pin has a longitudinal axis and the retention member has a longitudinal axis.
