The hinge unit has elongated joint rods (7,9) that are arranged between proximal shaft portion (1) and distal shaft portion (2) of endoscope shaft such that the shaft portions are bendable in inward and outward directions. The joint rods are connected to an inner joint portion (25) by a connection arm (17). A push rod (14) is provided to control bending of the proximal and distal shaft portions.
