The present invention relates to an organic polymer nanofibre matrix for adsorption of heavy metals and process for preparation thereof. More specifically, the present invention relates to nanofibre membrane matrix comprising natural silk fibroin nanofibre having diameter in the range from 47 to 75 nm useful for adsorption of heavy metals, especially copper and lead from the solution and it has the characteristics of nanoscale fibres, a great specific surface area, high porosity, many internal holes that enlarge a contact area with metal ions, increase an adsorption amount, shorten the time for achieving adsorption balance, adsorb heavy metal ions and the said process of preparation is using ionic liquid which avoids environment pollution and time consuming dialysis process.
