An apparatus for facilitating an intubation procedure, such as placement of an endotracheal tube, is disclosed. The apparatus includes a shaft having a wall having a flexible region proximate the tip of the shaft. The shaft has a hardness higher than the hardness of the flexible region at both the distal and proximal portions of the flexible region.
