In one aspect, the apparatus includes a housing (204) and 5 a portal member (202) extending distally from the housing (204), defining a longitudinal axis (a). The apparatus also has an iris seal (104) including a plurality of leaf members (130), disposed within the housing (204). The leaf members (130) are adapted for pivoting relative to the housing (204), to control the dimensioning of a passage (116) in response to the insertion of a surgical object. The leaf members (130) are not directly 10 linked to each other to provide for off-axis movement of the surgical object. The apparatus further includes an actuation mechanism, including a motor (134) and a sensor, operatively connected to the leaf members (130) and adopted for movement upon the introduction of the surgical object.
