The two opposing panels include a front panel and a back panel which are at least partly sealed to one another along their peripheries to form an outer edge. One of the 5 opposing panels includes a stomal opening for positioning around a stoma so that body waste excreted through the stoma is captured in the pouch. The pouch includes a filter for deodorization of odorized gas from the body waste and an opening for emitting the deodorized gas to the atmosphere. The appliance also includes a pleated center panel between the two opposing panels at least partly covering the filter for protecting the filter 0 and deterring ballooning of the pouch from gas build up in the pouch. A first edge of the pleated panel is attached to the outer edge and a second edge of the pleated panel is intermittently secured to the front panel by a plurality of linearly arranged spot welds to produce extra material in the form of folds, corrugations or pleats.
