Provided herein are methods of preventing or reducing the effects of exposure to a mustard compound. The methods include the steps of contacting cells exposed to a mustard compound or at risk of exposure to a mustard compound with a composition comprising a polypeptide comprising RLIP76 or an active fragment or variant thereof.
