In some aspects, the invention relates to a self-expanding embolic capture centering device for centering a medical device within a conduit in a patient. The centering device is a self-expanding centering member having (a) an elongate shaft, (b) an open distal end, and an inner surface forming a central lumen having a flared distal portion, wherein the centering device is distal to proximal. Fluid flowing and received by the open distal end flows proximally along the flared distal portion of the central lumen and then exits the central lumen through one or more openings at the proximal portion of the centering member. And (c) a filter material configured to filter fluid received by the open distal end of the centering member.
