A method of preparing particles using an sonicator is disclosed. The method comprises under conditions sufficient to convert a particle forming solution containing a particle forming liquid and a particle forming agent into a plurality of droplets having a substantially uniform size from a fluid containing the particle forming solution. Including directing the fluid into contact with the sonication tip of the sonication device. The plurality of droplets are then contacted with the curing solution under conditions sufficient to solidify the droplets into particles having a substantially uniform particle size and then collected. Particles made based on the method can be solid or semi-solid, with diameters ranging from submicrometers to over 100 micrometers in size.
