A safety needle device (10) for percutaneous drug delivery to a patient includes a housing (16) that is slidably mounted on a second portion of a substantially L-shaped, hollow needle (12) for drug delivery. The housing includes a chamber (84) provided between a sleeve portion (54) and a passage (86). A forward end of the needle (26), which includes a tip (28), must deflect in order to pass through the passage into the chamber. The forward end of the needle is restricted from exiting the chamber through the sleeve portion and through the passage.
