The present invention provides a method for eradicating biofilms comprising contacting an alginate oligomer with a biofilm. The biofilm can be a biological or inanimate surface and provides both medical and non-medical uses and methods. In one aspect, the invention provides an alginate oligomer for treating or preventing a biofilm infection in an individual.
