Disclosed is a method for identifying a thermostabilization compound, the method comprising: measuring thermostability of a cocaine esterase (CocE) at a first high temperature selected from the group consisting of 34°C, about 37°C, 40°C, 42.5°C, 45°C, greater than about 50°C, and greater than about 95°C combining the CocE and a candidate compound, the candidate compound present at a concentration of less than about 1mM measuring thermostability of the CocE in combination with the candidate compound at the high temperature determining whether the candidate compound increases thermostability of the CocE.
