The present invention generally relates to the stabilisation of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) capsids, by specific substitution of amino acids in a specific region of FMDV VP2. The invention therefore provides a foot-and-mouth disease virus VP2 protein mutant that comprises at least one substitution of an amino acid located in the αA helix of a VP2 protein in a wild type FMDV VP2 protein and wherein the αA helix of a VP2 protein is located in the region aligning to the region between amino acid positions 87 and 98 of SEQ ID NO: 1, wherein the mutant is chosen from the group consisting of 1) the Serotype O mutants H87V, V90N, Y91F, S93H, S93Y, S93F, S93W, S93Q, L94V, S97V, S97I, S97Q and Y98F, and 2) the Serotype A mutants H93F and H93Q, and 3) the Serotype SAT-2 mutants S93H, S93Y, S93W, S93F and Y98F, wherein all position numbers are relative to the numbering of the amino acids presented in SEQ ID NO: 1.
