The device and method are designed to help people who, as a result of old age, illness or for some other reason, have difficulty in climbing stairs. The device includes a source of facilitating effort installed in the upper part of the stairway, a rail guide fixed above the stairway, preferably parallel to said stairway, a carriage that can move up and down the rail guide, a source of counterbalancing effort acting on the carriage and directed along the guide downward, as well as a rope thrown over a pulley fixed to the carriage, one end of which is connected to a source of facilitating effort, and the opposite end to a person. Thus, a method is realized in which a person walking up the stairs is affected by a force overcoming part of their weight.
