Compositions for oral administration to kidney poultry such as chickens, including caecum material from adult poultry and saline are disclosed. The composition may be used to improve the weight gain of poultry birds by administering it to young birds by gavage. The composition may also be used to enhance feed efficiency in poultry birds. Further disclosed is a composition for application to poultry litter, eg poultry paddy prepared with caecum material from adult poultry. The composition can be used to prevent or alleviate chicken intestinal colonization by pathogenic bacteria.
