Disclosed is an apparatus which generates a large number of negative ions in a space by generating a large quantity of electrons by using fine water droplets. In the apparatus according to one embodiment of the present invention, as a nozzle of a sprayer for spraying fine water droplets is negatively charged, and the water droplets having many electrons attached thereto are sprayed into the air from the nozzle and evaporate, many electrons are distributed in a space and these electrons attach themselves to electrophilic molecules such as oxygen, thereby generating many negative ions. Further, the present invention relates to an apparatus and method which eliminate microorganisms in a space by using the strong sterilizing power of these negative ions produce many oxygen atoms by using the dissociative attachment tendency of an oxygen molecule to break into two oxygen atoms when the electrons are attached to the oxygen molecule and by using the strong oxidizing power of the produced oxygen atoms, can further ensure the sterilizing power in the space.
