A bite detector (1100) is disclosed for providing an alarm signal indicative of movement of the line of a fishing rod, the detector comprising a movement sensor (1102) for generating a movement signal indicative of movement detected by the sensor； an alarm module (1106) for processing the movement signal and generating the alarm signal if appropriate； and a signal discriminator module (1104) for activating the alarm module when the movement signal has met at least one criterion for a length of time, the length of time being selectable from a range of lengths of time during operation.
