Bifunctional compounds that increase uric acid excretion and decrease uric acid production, and monofunctional compounds that either increase uric acid excretion or decrease uric acid production. Methods are provided for using these compounds to reduce uric acid levels in blood or serum, treat disorders of uric acid metabolism, and maintain normal uric acid levels in blood or serum . Also provided are pharmaceutical compositions comprising bifunctional and monofunctional compounds.
