PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods and compositions for treating disorders or damages that affect motor function and control in a subject.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method and a composition for delivering a transgene into the spinal cord and/or brainstem region of a subject by ventricle administration of a recombinant neurotrophic viral vector comprising an IGF-1 transgene. The viral vector delivers the transgene to a brain region which is susceptible to viral infection for expression of the encoded recombinant viral gene product.
