The present invention relates to an assembled elongated string comprising a sample collector and a sample collector driver for driving at least the sample collector through an item to be sampled. The sample collector is driven along a sampling axis aligned in the longitudinal direction of the string. The sample collector includes a punch having a longitudinally aligned bore. One end of the punch and bore provides a cutter that cuts the sample from the item and holds it in the bore as the punch passes through the sample. The sample collector also includes a plunger slidably supported on the punch so as to be movable within the bore between the retracted position and the advanced position relative to the punch. In use, movement of the plunger from the withdrawn position to the advanced position causes the sample held on the cutter to be displaced from the cutter. The sample collector driver includes a body that is telescopically contacted with the sample collector. In the retracted and compacted position, the driver can drive the sample collector through the item while keeping the plunger in the retracted position so that the sample can be cut and held by the cutter.
