A minoxidil-containing composition for external use, said composition being stable, exhibiting a good feel of use and causing little irritation, that is a cream preparation characterized by comprising minoxidil, 1.5 parts by mass or more, per part by mass of minoxidil, of a higher fatty acid and/or a salt thereof, a thickener and a surfactant and being substantially free from lower alcohols, wherein minoxidil can be dissolved without employing a lower alcohol in such a large amount as usually required for dissolving minoxidil. Examples of the higher fatty acid and/or a salt thereof usable therein include isostearic acid and oleic acid. As an example of the thickener, a carboxyvinyl polymer can be cited. As an example of the surfactant, a nonionic surfactant can be cited. Further, the cream preparation may contain a polyhydric alcohol such as 1,3-butylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, glycerol or propylene glycol. The pH value of the cream preparation is preferably 5-8.
