A polynucleotide that encodes a light-activated protein for use in a method of treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in an individual, wherein said method comprises: administering the polynucleotide that encodes the light-activated protein to the CA1 field. dorsal hippocampus, the anterior cingulate cortex of the individual or the basolateral tonsil of the individual where the light-activated protein is expressed on the cell membrane of excitatory neurons in the dorsal CA1 field of the hippocampus, the anterior cingulate cortex or the basolateral tonsil of the individual, and the protein is sensitive to light and is capable of hyperpolarization of neurons when neurons are illuminated with light, and activate the protein by light to reversibly inhibit the formation or recovery of a fear memory, trying thus the PTSD in the individual.Un polinucleótido que codifica una proteína activada por la luz para su uso en un método de tratamiento del trastorno de estrés postraumático (PTSD) en un individuo, en donde dicho método comprende: administrar el polinucleótido que codifica la proteína activada por la luz al campo CA1 dorsal del hipocampo, la corteza cingulada anterior del individuo o la amígdala basolateral del individuo en donde la proteína activada por la luz se expresa sobre la membrana celular de las neuronas excitadoras en el campo CA1 dorsal del hipocampo, la corteza cingulada anterior o la amígdala basolateral del individuo, y la proteína es sensible a la luz y es capaz de hiperpolarización de las neuronas cuando las neuronas son iluminadas con la luz, y activar la proteína mediante la luz para inhibir reversiblemente la formación o la recuperación de una memoria de miedo, tratando así el PTSD en el individuo.
