A hair care composition comprises: (i) a water soluble ester of formula RCOXR', wherein R is an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl or aryl group including a hydrocarbyl group of at least 5 carbon atoms； R' includes a water solubilising group； and X is O, S or NR", wherein R" ishydrogen or an alkyl group； and (ii) an oil. Component (i) may comprise a polysorbate, such as polysorbate 80. Preferably the oil is a plant oil selected from olive oil, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil. Component (i) may be present at from 20 to 50wt%. The composition may comprise a silicone such as PEG-12 dimethicone. A method of treating hair comprises contacting the hair with the composition, and may be carried out prior to shampooing.
