1. A composition implantable in the body of a mammal, containing a physiologically acceptable carrier and predominantly spherical particles of bioactive glass. The composition of claim 1, wherein the predominantly spherical particles of the bioactive glass have a unimodal particle size distribution. The composition of claim 2, wherein the unimodal particle size distribution comprises particles between about 180 microns and about 355 microns. The composition of claim 2, wherein the unimodal particle size distribution comprises particles between about 355 microns and about 500 microns. The composition of claim 1, wherein the predominantly spherical particles of the bioactive glass have a bimodal particle size distribution. The composition of claim 5, wherein the bimodal particle size distribution comprises particles between 32 and 200 μm and 300 and 800 μm. The composition of claim 1, wherein the bimodal distribution comprises particles between about 90 microns and about 180 microns and particles between about 355 microns and about 500 microns. The composition according to any one of paragraphs. 1-7, where the carrier is an admixture of at least two non-aqueous compounds. The composition of claim 8, wherein the compounds are phospholipids, polyhydroxy compounds, polyesters, and a mixture of the above substances. The composition of claim 9, wherein the admixture contains a solid form of phosphatidylcholine and a liquid form of phosphatidylcholine. The composition of claim 8, wherein the composition comprises 60% -90% of predominantly spherical particles of bioactive glass by weight of the composition. The composition of claim 8, wherein the composition comprises from about 70% to 80% of predominantly spherical particles of bioactive glass by weight of the composition.
