PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for tracking items such as catheters or probes that have been inserted into a patient during an invasive medical procedure, the method and apparatus displaying images of the tracked items in registration with each other and in registration with an image of a region where the items are situated.SOLUTION: A method includes calculating locations of first sensors attached to a probe 20 that has been inserted into a human patient, and calculating positions of second sensors attached to a sheath 21 via which the probe is inserted. The method also includes calculating respective shapes of the probe 20 and the sheath 21, to achieve a best fit to the calculated probe sensor locations and sheath sensor positions, while restricting the probe 20 to pass through the sheath 21.
