A method of producing amainly carbonate bonded article comprises astep of providing an alkaline granular materialcomprising one or more alkaline earth metalsilicate phases. The method comprises a stepof compacting the granular material to obtaina compact of the granular material. Theporosity of the compact is smaller than orequal to 37% by volume. The intrinsicpermeability of the compact is at least 1.10-12cm2.The method also comprises a reacting steparranged to form at least 5% by weight ofcarbonates (CO-23), by reacting the granularmaterial with carbon dioxide in the presence ofwater, thus transforming the compact into thearticle. In the reacting step, the compact,being unsaturated with moisture at thebeginning of the reacting step, is brought in anatmosphere comprising said carbon dioxide.The atmosphere is at a temperature of at least70°C and at a pressure of at least 0.5 MPa.The pressure is also higher than the saturatedvapour pressure of water at said temperature.As a result, at least a portion of saidcarbonates are formed by reaction of the one or morealkaline earth metal silicate phases. Theinvention is also related to an article obtained by the method.
