PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To design a transmitter used in a magnetic tracking system. An apparatus having a frame surrounding a volume. The apparatus includes three pairs of isolated planar conductive coils, each pair of isolated coils having a common axis of symmetry, and the three pairs such that the common axes of symmetry are orthogonal to each other, and A coil is attached to the frame so that it surrounds the volume. An AC power supply is coupled to drive each pair of separate coils in anti-phase so as to produce a magnetic field having a preset spatial dispersion across the volume. The device also includes a probe configured to enter the volume and having a sensor coupled to generate a signal in response to a rate of change of the magnetic field and a preset spatial dispersion of the magnetic field. The processor is configured to receive the signal and responsively formulate the position of the probe within the volume.
