A device for the controlled intermittent or continuous administration of nitric oxide (NO) to the lung of a mammal, said device comprising: a reaction chamber (16, 54) in fluid communication with the mammal； a system for introducing reactants into the reaction chamber that react thereto to form NO； a mobile reaction surface (24, 28) included in the reaction chamber and having a solid nitrite salt or a reducer disposed thereon； a controllable liquid dispensing system (12) adapted to introduce liquid aqueous droplets comprising a dissolved reducer or nitrite salt at a controlled rate on the reaction surface to form NO for administration to the patient by inhalation； and a control system (68) for controlling the reaction between the reactants in the reaction chamber to produce a predetermined amount of NO to be delivered to the mammal, where the administration of NO to the lung is controlled by controlling the rate of the droplets.Un dispositivo para la administración intermitente o continua controlada de óxido nítrico (NO) al pulmón de un mamífero, comprendiendo dicho dispositivo: una cámara de reacción (16, 54) en comunicación fluida con el mamífero； un sistema para introducir reactantes en la cámara de reacción que reaccionan en la misma para formar NO； una superficie de reacción móvil (24, 28) incluida en la cámara de reacción y que tiene una sal nitrito sólida o un reductor dispuesto sobre la misma； un sistema dispensador de líquido controlable (12) adaptado para introducir gotitas acuosas líquidas que comprende un reductor disuelto o sal nitrito a una velocidad controlada sobre la superficie de reacción para formar NO para la administración al paciente por inhalación； y un sistema de control (68) para controlar la reacción entre los reactantes en la cámara de reacción para producir una cantidad predeterminada de NO para suministrarla al mamífero, en donde la administración de NO al pulmón se controla controlando la velocidad de las gotitas.
