The discosure relates to amphotheric surfactants for use in preventing and/or treating vaginal infections, in particular for preventing and treating pathogenic vaginal biofilms in vaginal infections, as well as to pharmaceutical compositions containing the amphoteric surfactants as active ingredients. Preferred amphoteric surfactants include: cocoamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, disodium cocamphodiacetate, sodium cocoamphopropionate and sodium lauroamphoacetate. In particular anti-microbial action against Gardnerella vaginalis is shown.
