The gas supply includes a nitric oxide production system. The system has a medium that includes a source of nitrite ions. The working electrode is in contact with the medium. The Cu(II)-ligand complex is in contact with the working electrode. A reference/counter electrode, or a reference electrode and a counter electrode, contacts the medium and is separate from the working electrode. An inlet conduit supplies nitrogen gas to the medium and an outlet conduit transports a stream of nitrogen gas and nitric oxide from the medium.
