Disclosed are quinolinyl phosphonic acid derivatives compounds of formula I, salts thereof and methods for their preparation. Specific examples of compounds of formula I include: diammonium [(6-bromo-2-cyanoquinolin-7-yl)(difluoro)methyl]phosphate and [{ 2-[(phenylamino)carbonyl]-6-bromoquinolin-7-yl} (difluoro)methyl]phosphonic acid. Compounds of formula I are inhibitors of protein tyrosine phosphatases such as PTP-1B and are useful in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and other PTP-1B mediated diseases (including cancer).
