A medical device system comprising a first medical device (14) having a device electrode (40, 42)； a plurality of measurement electrodes (46) configured for coupling to an external surface of a body and comprising active and passive electrodes, wherein each of the passive electrodes comprises one of the plurality of measurement electrodes (46) other than one of a pair of active electrodes and being adapted for acquiring impedance signals, the plurality of measurement electrodes including an impedance reference electrode providing an impedance reference value； and an electronic control unit (ECU) configured to establish a virtual reference electrode using the plurality of measurement electrodes； generate a position value for the device electrode (40, 42) relative to the virtual reference electrode and responsive to the impedance reference value generated by the impedance reference electrode； and scale the position value using a scaling value.
