A medical device system comprising a first medical device (14) having a device electrode (40, 42); a plurality of measurement electrodes (46) configured for coupling to an external surface of a body and comprising active and passive electrodes, wherein each of the passive electrodes comprises one of the plurality of measurement electrodes (46) other than one of a pair of active electrodes and being adapted for acquiring impedance signals, the plurality of measurement electrodes including an impedance reference electrode providing an impedance reference value; and an electronic control unit (ECU) configured to establish a virtual reference electrode using the plurality of measurement electrodes; generate a position value for the device electrode (40, 42) relative to the virtual reference electrode and responsive to the impedance reference value generated by the impedance reference electrode; and scale the position value using a scaling value.
