A cosmetic agent comprising, in a cosmetically compatible carrier, 2-butyloctanoic acid and at least one diol of the formula (I): Wherein n denotes an integer selected from the group of 3, 5, 7 and 9, wherein the total amount of compound of formula (I) is from 0.05 to 10 wt% relative to the total weight of the cosmetic agent is provided. A non-therapeutic cosmetic method for preventing and/ or reducing body odor, the method comprising applying said cosmetic agent to the skin of the armpits, and allowing the cosmetic agent to remain on the skin for at least one hour is provided. Use of said cosmetic agent to prevent and/ or reduce body odor released by perspiration is outlined. The diol is 1,2-hexanediol, 1,2-octanediol, 1,2-decanediol or 1,2-dodecanediol, preferably 1,2-hexanediol or 1,2-octanediol.
