PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an identification apparatus and an identification method capable of detecting a movable shaft of an object to be identified such as a medical instrument, without adding an identification mark to the object.SOLUTION: The identification apparatus includes an image input means 10 for inputting an image of an object to be identified, an edge extraction means 12 for extracting an edge from the image input by the image input means 10, a straight line detection means 13 for detecting a plurality of straight lines from the edge extracted by the edge extraction means 12, and a movable shaft obtaining means 14 for obtaining a movable shaft center point by acquiring an intersection point of the plurality of straight lines detected by the straight line detection means 13.
