PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a breathing assistance system for delivering a flow of heated and humidified gases to a user.SOLUTION: A humidifier system 1 comprises: a humidifier chamber 5 which holds and heats a prescribed volume of water 20, and which in use receives a flow of gases from a blower unit 3 via an inlet port 23； a temperature sensor 15 to measure the temperature of the gases exiting the humidifier system via an outlet port； an ambient temperature sensor 60 to measure the temperature of the gases before the gases enter the humidifier system； a flow sensor to measure the flow rate of the flow of gases； and a controller 8b to receive data from the temperature sensor and the flow sensor and determine a control output in response.
