A method and apparatus for detecting a target substance in a monitored environment involves, in a training phase, training at least one animal capable of detecting the target substance to execute a particular avoidance action, immediately upon detecting said target substance, in order to avoid particular aversive stimulus and in an operational phase, exposing the trained animal to a specimen (e.g., air) from the monitored environment or object, and sensing when the animal has executed the particular avoidance action.La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de détecter une substance cible dans un environnement surveillé. Le procédé consiste, lors d’une phase d’entraînement, à entraîner au moins un animal capable de détecter la substance cible en vue d’effectuer une action d’évitement particulière, immédiatement lors de la détection de ladite substance cible, afin d’éviter un stimulus aversif particulier et, lors d’une phase opérationnelle, à exposer l’animal entraîné à un spécimen (de l’air par exemple) provenant de l’environnement surveillé ou un objet, et à sentir lorsque l’animal a exécuté l’action d’évitement particulière.
