The invention provides a method of making a livestock feed for piglets during weaning, wherein the feed is a gel type food. The method comprises: forming a feed mixture by mixing feed nutrient components with water, a gelling agent and a calcium component that is a calcium salt which is initially insoluble but may be made soluble, wherein the gelling agent is a gum which binds with water; and, once the feed mixture is formed, lowering the pH to solubilize the calcium component such that the gelling agent reacts with the solubilized calcium component and a gel feed is formed comprising a gel matrix in which the feed nutrient components are retained. The water is a major component of the gel matrix and the gel feed includes the water and the feed nutrient components in an amount sufficient for a required nutrient and water intake for the piglets.
