The invention provides a method of making a livestock feed for piglets during weaning, wherein the feed is a gel type food. The method comprises: forming a feed mixture by mixing feed nutrient components with water, a gelling agent and a calcium component that is a calcium salt which is initially insoluble but may be made soluble, wherein the gelling agent is a gum which binds with water； and, once the feed mixture is formed, lowering the pH to solubilize the calcium component such that the gelling agent reacts with the solubilized calcium component and a gel feed is formed comprising a gel matrix in which the feed nutrient components are retained. The water is a major component of the gel matrix and the gel feed includes the water and the feed nutrient components in an amount sufficient for a required nutrient and water intake for the piglets.
