The invention relates to a material or biomaterial comprising silicic acid condensates having a low cross-linkage rate as well as to methods for the production of said material/biomaterial. In a disclosed method for producing modestly cross-linked silicic acid structures, a sol is produced while further condensation is prevented when certain cross-linkages of the silicic acid have been reached. Preferably, structures having a size of 0.5 to 1000 nm are produced, e.g. polyhedral structures or aggregates thereof. Further condensation can be prevented by chemically reacting, e.g. esterifying or sylilating, OH groups of the silicic acid condensates. In one embodiment, the material predominantly comprises silicon dioxide (SiO2), in particular silicon dioxide that is nanostructured and has a low cross-linkage rate because of the modification caused by esterification, for example. The material can be used in the medical field for therapeutic purposes or for cosmetic purposes and can enter in direct contact with biological tissue of the body. Said material interacts chemically, physically, and biologically with the respective biological systems. It is degradable and can supply the silicic acid needed for metabolism. Moreover, the material can have a supporting or shielding effect and can be provided in the form of a granulate, microparticles, fiber and woven or nonwoven fabric made therefrom, or as a layer on implants or wound dressings. The material can be used as a medical product or as a food supplement.
