The method involves illuminating a soil and/or liquid medium with fast neutrons of high energy from an artificial neutron source (7) of a stationary probe (3). The neutrons are decelerated and captured by pollutants e.g. inorganic and/or organic compounds. The number of thermal neutrons is registered and conveyed to a computer (14) after digitization, and is processed by a microprocessor, from which type and quantity of the pollutants are continuously determined. An alarm (15) for intervention is released, when a determined value exceeds a permissible limit value. An independent claim is also included for a device for continuous monitoring of pollutants in a soil and/or liquid medium.
