PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handheld device and a corresponding method that ensure acquisition of high-quality optoacoustic images in a simplified manner.SOLUTION: A handheld device (10) according to the present invention comprises: an irradiation unit (2b) for irradiating an object with electromagnetic radiation (5), particularly light and a detection unit (1a, 1b) for detecting ultrasonic waves which are generated in the object upon irradiation with light, wherein the detection unit includes an array of detection elements. In order to acquire high-quality tomographic optoacoustic images from different depths within the object, the handheld device is provided with a recess (6), in which the irradiation unit and the array of detection elements are provided.
