Disinfection is the process of elimination of most pathogenic microorganisms (excluding bacterial spores) on inanimate objects. Disinfection can be achieved by physical or chemical methods. In physical method of drying of food items for long term preservation has always been on the highest priority to human beings. Open air drying is traditional choice due to low cost and applicable on large scale. Nowadays open air drying have partially replaced by solar drier in industrial and commercial sector. It has been observed that the open air drying in stored foodstuffs is not sufficient for killing of all pests like weevils, grain borers etc. due to limited temperature rise. Attempts have been made to develop solar drier/cooker that can be used for pest control by physical disinfection, including box type or multiple reflective types. Costs, handiness, light in weight, non attentive use, releasing of moisture into surrounding, retention of nutritive content and also works well with diffused solar radiation has been a big challenge to achieve. This gadgets uses high grade material like more metallic parts, reflective surfaces and insulation, impose limitation in long run, in the world of energy crises. To overcome above mentioned problems an attempt has been made to develop low cost, user and environmental friendly multipurpose hollow hemispherical solar collector that help in preservation of food stuff for long run use without degrading its nutritive contents, for domestic and industrial applications. Such solar collector can be used for drying, heating and pest control needs by physical disinfection.
