A multifocal intraocular lens 30 has first and second portions 31, 32 of different refractive indices, contiguous with one another, and non-circularly symmetrical around an optical axis 33. The first portion 31 may provide a far distance focal point, and the second portion 32 mayprovide a near distance focal point. Also disclosed is a method of making a multifocal intraocular lens, in which one portion of two is exposed to refractive index changing light (fig.10)
