The present invention is directed to a hemostatic material comprising a consolidated hemostatic aggregate of cellulose fibers. In some embodiments, the hemostatic material further comprises additives such as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) or other polysaccharides, calcium salts, anti-infective agents, hemostatic agents, gelatin, collagen, or combinations thereof. In another aspect, the present invention is directed to a method of making the hemostatic material described above by compacting a cellulosic material into a hemostatic aggregate.
