The invention is directed to a system and method for providing an ARDS indication of a patient comprising a sampling device for obtaining a gas sample of the exhaled breath of a patient, a measuring unit for measuring a content of n-octane in the exhaled breath of a patient, a controller which is able to distinguish if the patient has or may develop ARDS based on the content of n-octanein the exhaled breath of a patient resulting in a ARDS indication of the patient and provided with a protocol for providing output regarding the ARDS indication of the patient, and a user interface for indicating the ARDS indication to a user.L'invention concerne un système et une méthode permettant d'obtenir une indication de syndrome de détresse respiratoire aigüe (SDRA) d'un patient, faisant appel à un dispositif d'échantillonnage servant à obtenir un échantillon de gaz de la respiration exhalée du patient, à une unité de mesure servant à mesurer une teneur en n-octane de la respiration exhalée du patient, à un organe de commande pouvant distinguer si le patient présente un SDRA, ou peut le développer, sur la base de la teneur en n-octane de la respiration exhalée du patient, qui a pour conséquence une indication de SDRA du patient, et à un protocole permettant d'obtenir une sortie concernant l'indication de SDRA du patient, ainsi qu'à une interface utilisateur servant à indiquer l'indication de SDRA à un utilisateur.
