A medical device is disclosed, comprising a substrate and a hydrophilicsurface coating arranged on said substrate.The substrate has, on its surface coated with said hydrophilic surfacecoating, a surface texture with an arithmetical meandevia-tion of the surface profile (Ra) of at least 3µm and/or a profilesection height difference (Rdc (1-99%)) of at least 18 µm. It hassurprisingly been found that the increased surface roughness of the substrateprovides significant improvements in e. waterretention for the hydrophilic coating.
