The grating plate (1) may be sown with grass after filling with earth. The growth of grass (4) on the plate can be mown before laying in position on the new lawn. After filling with earth and scattering the seeds, the plate can be left on the grounds, e.g. in a greenhouse until greening has taken place, it being then laid in position. It can be filled with earth and sown before laying. There are apertures (3) at the bottom of the plate to allow the roots of the grass to grow down into the soil of the lawn.
