A method and system for assessing proximity between an electrode (12) andtissue (16) is provided. The system includesan electronic control unit (ECU). The ECU (32) is configured to acquire valuesfor first and second components of a compleximpedance between the electrode (12) and the tissue (16), and to calculate anelectrical coupling index (ECI) responsive tothe first and second values. The ECU (32) is further configured to process theECI to determine the proximity of the electrode (12)to the tissue (16). The ECU (32) may be configured to calculate an electricalcoupling index rate (ECIR) based on the calculatedECI and information relating to the change in location of the electrode (12),and to assess proximity based on the ECIR. Alternatively,the ECU (32) may be configured to assess the proximity using the calculatedECI, as opposed to the ECIR.
